Consistency is more important than length. If you don't have a set prayer routine, or you struggle to be consistent, it is better to start small (even 5 minutes a day) then to pray for 2 hours once a week. Morning Prayers

Morning Offering: O my God, in union with the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer Thee the Precious Blood of Jesus from all the altars throughout the world, joining with it the offering of my every thought, word, and action of this day. O my Jesus, I desire today to gain every indulgence and merit I can, and I offer them together with myself, to Mary Immaculate, that she may best apply them in the interests of Thy Most Sacred Heart. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us! Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us! Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

Prayer of Purity (Recited 3 times): O Mary, Through thine Immaculate Conception, make my body pure and my soul holy. Keep me this day from mortal sin. Followed by 3 Hail Marys.

Daytime Prayers

Prayer to Obtain Grace of Every Mass (It is meritorious to attend Mass during weekdays whenever possible): Eternal Father, I humbly offer Thee our poor presence, and that of the whole of humanity, from the beginning to the end of the world at all the Masses that ever have or ever will be prayed. I offer Thee all the pains, sufferings, prayers, sacrifices, joys, and relaxations of our lives, in union with those of our dear Lord Jesus here on earth. May the Most Precious Blood of Christ, all His bloody wounds, and agony save us, through the sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary. Amen.

Holy Rosary: Recite the 5-decade Rosary each day. The saints are unanimous in declaring its power before God. If you find a whole Rosary difficult at first, start with just one decade.

Spiritual Reading: Spend 10-15 minutes each day reading from a good spiritual book. Read slowly, and pause occasionally to think about what you have read. You can find some recommendations on our General Catholic Resources page.

Meditation: Spend an additional 10-15 minutes each day in silent prayer, thinking about our Lord, the Blessed Virgin, or one of the saints. Talk to them and ask for their help to grow in virtue, overcome faults, and be kinder and more loving towards others, especially family members. Holy Rosary, spiritual reading, and meditation can also be done with your morning or night prayer.

Night Prayer

Examination of Conscience: Think back quickly through the day and see if anything comes to mind for which you should be sorry. Ask God for forgiveness, and resolve to do better the next day. In addition to being sorry for our sins of the past, we should also resolve to amend our behavior for the future.

Prayer for Daily Neglects: Eternal Father, I offer thee the Sacred Heart of Jesus with all its love, all its sufferings, and all its merits: First to expiate the sins I have committed this day and during all my life. Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Second to purify the good I have done badly this day and during all my life. Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Third to supply for the good I ought to have done, and that I have neglected this day and during all my life. Lord, in your great generosity, heal my sickness, wash away my defilement, enlighten my blindness, enrich my poverty, and clothe my nakedness. May I receive the bread of angels, the King of kings and Lord of lords, with humble reverence, with the purity and faith, the repentance and love, and the determined purpose that will help to bring me to salvation. May I receive the sacrament of the Lord’s Body and Blood, and its reality and power. Kind God, may I receive the Body of Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, born from the womb of the Virgin Mary, and so be received into His mystical body and numbered among His members. Prayers After Communion: Lord, Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mercy, You have fed me with the Precious Body and Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good. May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritually. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You. And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and Holy Ghost, are true and perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. Act of Spiritual Communion (for those not receiving communion): My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things and I desire Thee in my soul. Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though Thou wert already there, I embrace Thee and unite myself wholly to Thee; permit not that I should ever be separated from Thee. Amen.

The Angelus is prayed after each High Mass from Pentecost Sunday to Easter. The Regina Caeli is prayed during the Easter season (Easter Sunday through Pentecost Sunday).

What is the Rosary?

The Rosary is scripture-based prayer in which we mediate upon the life of Christ through the assistance of Our Lady, while praying common Catholic prayers. Traditionally, we reflect on the different mysteries (Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious) of Christ depending on the day/time of year.

Joyful Mysteries (Monday, Thursday, Sundays during Advent)

The Annunciation: In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. Luke 1:26-1:27 (Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition)

The Visitation: In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!" Luke 1:39-42 (RSVCE)

The Nativity: In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. The Presentation in the Temple: And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Luke 2:21-24 (RSVCE)

The Finding of Jesus in the Temple: Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday, Friday, Sundays during Lent)

The Agony in the Garden: Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.” Matthew 26:36-39 (RSVCE)

The Scourging at the Pillar: Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. Matthew 27:26 (RSVCE)

The Crowning with Thorns: Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe upon him, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on his head, and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Matthew 27:27-29 (RSVCE)

The Carrying of the Cross: And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). Mark 15:21-22 (RSVCE)

The Crucifixion and Death: And when they came to the place which is called the Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday, Saturday, all other Sundays)

The Resurrection: But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen." Luke 24:1-5 (RSVCE)

The Ascension: So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. Mark 16:19 (RSVCE)

The Descent of the Holy Spirit: When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4 (RSVCE)

The Assumption: [Mary said,] “For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name." Luke 1:48-49 (RSVCE)

The Coronation of Mary: And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Revelation 12:1 (RSVCE)

Format of the Rosary: Below are the steps for how to pray the Rosary. Each of the prayers listed in the steps is outlined below.

1. Make the Sign of the Cross.

2. Holding the crucifix, say the Apostles' Creed.

3. On the first bead, say an Our Father.

4. Say one Hail Mary on each of the next three beads.

5. Say the Glory Be.

6. For each of the five decades, announce the mystery (optional: add a brief reading from Scripture on that mystery), then say the Our Father.

7. While holding each of the ten beads of the decade, next say ten Hail Marys while meditating on the Mystery. Then say a Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer.

8. After saying the five decades, say the Hail, Holy Queen.

9. Conclude with:

   • V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

   • R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Act of Faith: O My God! I firmly believe that Thou art one God in three divine Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; I believe that Thy divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, Who canst neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen.

Act of Hope: My God! Relying on Thy infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen

Act of Charity: My God! I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all good and deserving of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon for all whom I have injured. Amen.

Act of Self-Consecration: Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess. You have given all to me. To you, O Lord, I return it all. All is yours; dispose of it wholly according to your will. Give me your love and grace, for this is enough for me. For with these I am rich enough and desire nothing more. Amen.
